5.1 Pharmacodynamic properties Pharmatherapeutic group: Antithrombotic agents, Vitamin K antagonists ATC code: B01AA03 Mechanism of action Coumadin is a synthetic anticoagulant of the coumarin series. It acts by inhibiting the formation of active clotting factors II, VII, IX and X.

5.2 Pharmacokinetic properties Absorption Coumadin is readily absorbed from the gastro-intestinal tract. Distribution Its plasma half-life is about 40 hours. Biotransformation It is metabolised in the liver. Elimination It is excreted in the urine mainly as metabolites.
