5.1 Pharmacodynamic properties Pharmacotherapeutic group: sex hormones and modulators of the genital system, progestogens, Estren derivatives ATC Code: G03DC02 Norethisterone has progestational actions similar to those of progesterone, but is a more potent inhibitor of ovulation and has weak oestrogenic and androgenic properties. It is used to treat a number of disorders of the menstrual cycle.
Pharmacokinetic Properties
5.2 Pharmacokinetic properties Norethisterone is absorbed from the gastro-intestinal tract and its effects last for at least 24 hours. It is excreted in the urine. • Metabolism Norethisterone is partly metabolised to ethinylestradiol after oral administration of norethisterone or norethisterone acetate in humans. This conversion results in an equivalent dose of about 4-6 µg ethinylestradiol per 1 mg orally administered norethisterone / norethisterone acetate.
